Why remittance costs so much
Traditional cross-border rails cannot land the money in one hop. Every extra node is a bill.
Bank networks are limited by how far they reach. A second party, a third, a fourth — sometimes more — has to handle the payment before it arrives. None of those processing nodes is free. By the time the funds reach the person, the stacked cost shows up as a high fee.
The gap in the numbers
Industry averages are not a rounding error. They are what stacked nodes look like as a percentage of the send.
6.49% and 14.55% are World Bank figures for Q1 2025 remittance costs. Bank and corridor differ; actual fees vary. ID Remit is the Account ID hop: transfer fee S$ 0, conversion with no extra fee.
Conversion
Zero fee is not only the ID send. Conversion has no extra fee, whether it happens automatically or you convert yourself.
Different currency? Send it directly. ID Transfer converts automatically. You do not have to convert first.
Prefer to convert in Starryblu first, then send? That path has no extra conversion fee either.
The rate is shown in the app before you send. It is not mixed into a transfer fee, because the transfer fee is S$ 0.
Before you send
You see the cost and the rate before you confirm — not after a chain of banks has taken a cut.
| ID Remit | Traditional remittance | |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer fee | S$ 0 | Average 6.49%; banks 14.55% |
| Conversion | No extra fee, rate shown first | Often buried in the quoted rate |
| Parties on the path | Account ID send | 2nd, 3rd, 4th+ parties |
| What you enter | Account ID + name | SWIFT, IBAN, bank, often address |
